If you have been around here long enough, you will have met Baseborn as a one-woman project. With great excitement (and a healthy dose of nervousness), I am proud and grateful to announce that I will now be working with a skilled team of sewists and in Lithuania so that my designs can be brought to life with consistency of fit and quality. It is a great relief to know that I can now share the labor amongst this small group of women who I have so enjoyed connecting with for the last year. While it is daunting to entrust others with the task to uphold my values for design and quality, I have so far been very impressed with the kindness and skill that shines from this team. Why Lithuania? I wanted my designs to be produced in Europe so that I could easily visit production, but I was optioning exactly where and who. I always heard about the quality of linen from Lithuania, and since that is the top textile I work with, it seemed reasonable to search there. After some time of meeting and discussing with different production managers from there, I went with my gut on a team that seems to hold the right balance of quality, price, and humanity. They do not offer the cheapest or the fastest turn around that I found, but hopefully that will prove to be the wise choice over time, as sustainability for the earth and especially for human workers is my top priority. Living wages, normal working hours, healthy conditions comes before quantity and efficiency.
Being the one-woman business was not sustainable for me. Previously, I had been doing everything myself from sewing, to order fulfillment, to all the other admin duties. While I loved handling every detail myself, this total-DIY method of operating a business was overwhelming and began to cause suffering to my creativity, as well as my physical health. As this project grows, it only makes sense that the team grows too. It has been a joy to work intimately with my new production team, translating the details I care most about into patterns and ensuring that the quality of Baseborn can stay consistent across different hands. With the new collection, you can still enjoy historical construction methods, traditional straight stitches (no overlock/serger stitching) strong and durable french or flat felled seams, deep pockets, and natural materials. I never use elastic but rather clever historical designs that accommodate a range of sizes, such as lacing, buckles, overlapping wrap panels, and more. So far the only plastic I have incorporated so far into any designs is the small plastic backings for the fabric buttons that you can see on some skirts. Otherwise, everything else is recyclable or reusable, and you can feel good about bringing Baseborn items into your home that are natural and decomposable.
When it comes to pricing, the cost of my items will actually stay very similar to as they were before. Only now, I can offer them with more regular restocking. I will still be hands on, reinforcing buttons and other little checks of quality before I package up parcels. I am also hoping, once I get into a routine with this new chapter, I can start offering custom pieces again as my passion remains fervent for creating unique and tailored garments that make a body feel handsome and lush. Bespoke pieces will remain at a higher price point than the ready-made pieces. Stay tuned for more updates about that.
An update from Baseborn
With heart, from Devon

What is changing?
Production is moving from US to Lithuania.
Operations are moving from US to EU, so this may implement tariffs for some customers.
I will no longer be sewing the ready-made* garments. Instead, they will be made by a small team of sewists who excel in consistency, following my strict guidelines for sewing methods and quality.
Order fulfillment will be much faster with more frequent shipping dates.
Response times to inquiries/emails will also be much faster! (sorry to everyone I accidentally ignored before...)
Baseborn will have a much better chance of sustainability in every sense of the phrase
Baseborn will start feeling a little more ~pRoFesSiOnaL~ you will hear more from me via email, and may even see the occasional marketing ad here and there. Imagine that, a shop doing marketing.
*I will continue to make custom garments on occasion.
What is staying the same?
I will still be designing everything myself with strict guidelines to ensure historical sewing methods for strong seams and beautiful finishing.
Baseborn will continue to use OEKO-TEX certified 100% linen and high quality 100% wool for all of my garments along with other natural materials like metal, wood, bone, horn.
Prices will be pretty consistent with how they were before despite recent inflation thanks to spreading the workload amongst more people and increasing efficiency.
Continue using as little plastic as possible throughout production/packaging.
My immense gratitude for everyone's support and word-of-mouth marketing that has given me the ability to pursue my passion of historical clothing professionally and getting this far with my dream<3
To recap...
