Any Viking Age enthusiast has probably heard of or seen this style of head gear. In 1936, near Skjoldehamn, Norway, a farmer discovered a body wrapped in layers of fabric, hide, and birch branches. Guesses as to the time period of this long-since-past person ranged from 1000 years old to a much more recent 100 years. Thanks to multiple rounds of carbon dating done between the 1980s and present day , current estimates regard this discovery originating from the 11th century, right towards the later half of the the "Viking Age, as the era is fondly referred. Gender, sex, culture, and lifestyle of this person can be only guessed at, as the evidence analysis offers only faint hints. However, we can still marvel at the preservation of this person who lived over a millennium ago, the fact that their story may be unknown to us but their presence lives on in the modern age, and that we as humans never cease longing for connection with those who came before us.
With this in mind, I offer an interpretation of this garment.
