Philosophy:
If clothing is a celebration of the body, then dressing is a ceremony. Clothes become more than merely function or adornment. They become a meeting point between maker, wearer, and material—a vessel shaped by many hands and forces. Through careful construction and consideration, garments can take on a kind of lived spirit: softened by time, marked by movement, shaped by the hands that crafted them and the life of the person who wears them. Anyone who has witnessed the evolution of a beloved old shirt or heirloom blanket knows this.
Our ancestors had comparatively few and precious belongings. Their clothing was made to be worn often, repaired when needed, and kept close — allowing such items to gather presence rather than be replaced. This perspective encourages a slower, more intentional approach to design. In this way, each garment becomes not just something you own, but something you build a relationship with.
Baseborn exists to offer clothing that can be lived-in, pieces that are both enduring and expressive, and bind us to the living world we call nature. It is a reflection of Devon’s ongoing pursuit: to create garments that connect us to the past and motivate us to truly live.
Materials:
Natural materials are central to Baseborn's identity. We use only 100% linen that is certified by the "OEKO-TEX Standard 100" (read more on the OEKO-TEX website). This means that the woven and dyed fabric is tested against over 1,000 chemicals and is deemed harmless to human skin/interaction. And thank goodness for that.
We also use other traditional materials such as metal, wood, bone, and horn. Garments are designed with construction methods that minimize unnecessary fabric waste and are packed with recycled or recyclable materials.
A note about clothing and gender:
At Baseborn, we believe clothing does not have defined gender, but that this is defined by the wearer and their take on self-expression. Baseborn fully supports (nay, implores!) a person to explore and experiment outside of gender-binary fashion "norms". Indeed, any norms really. Life is more beautiful that way.

Who:
Baseborn is an independent clothing brand founded in 2021 by designer Devon Rawlings, a hobby historian devoted to the enduring spirit of garments made with intention, integrity, and longevity in mind. Rooted in a deep appreciation for historical clothing of spanning the last thousand years, Baseborn used traditional construction methods and silhouettes to create pieces that are made for working people who enjoy beauty as much as utility. Currently based in the Netherlands.
“Baseborn” speaks to the origin — the spirit
...to what is fundamental, unadorned, and true: raw natural materials, durable construction, and the enduring forms that precede trend or ornament.
Baseborn is informed by an animistic sensibility—the idea that the world is not made only of inert objects, but of relations. In this view, the materials we wear are not passive: linen, wool, wood, bone, and metal all carry memory within them.
Today, Baseborn operates as a small, collaborative production between Devon and a skilled team of sewists in Lithuania. With Devon's guidance, the studio meticulously crafts each garment using the quality techniques and elements that Baseborn has become appreciated for.
If you have been around here long enough, you will have met Baseborn as a one-woman project. With great excitement (and a little bit of nervousness), Devon is proud and grateful to now work with a skilled team that allows the brand to grow while preserving its original values. Sustainability is prioritized in every sense of the term, now better than ever: in enduring products, natural materials, and fair working conditions that better ensure consistency and care.
